3 Heat Free Styles To Try This Season!
Now that August is on the horizon, the summer heat is showing my hair zero mercy. Everything feels sticky as the streets become thick with humidity, and it becomes easier to resist all activities requiring an iota of energy. I especially had a rough time figuring out how to tame my curls in this weather. Summer heat waves are rough on curls, so I contemplated blowing them out and going straight, to simplify styling and avoid that scary, frizzy Buckwheat thing my hair tends to do in extreme heat. However, as I felt the intense heat blow against the back of my neck, I realized that was a terrible idea. Not only is the intense, direct heat of a diffuse free blow dryer damaging to my delicate curls, but the last thing I wanted to do was contribute more hot air to the already scorching atmosphere. So I wet my hair, and using my handy Miss Jessie's products, started from scratch with some heat freestyling alternatives. Here are some of the great techniques I discovered for keeping curls looking hot while staying cool!
The Lupita Look: Natural Wash n Go Style
Recently in Elle Magazine, actress Lupita Nyong'o shared with fans her styling secrets, tips, and all-time favorite products, including Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme. So if you are interested in mimicking her timelessly stunning look, this is the heat freestyle for you!
What you will need:
- Miss Jessie's Rapid Recovery Treatment.
- A moisturizing styler: either Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme or Curly Buttercreme.
- A wide-toothed comb.
When styling tight curls and kinkier textures, less is more. Don't have to overthink your styling methods, because over saturating hair with products and washing or brushing hair on a daily basis can do you more harm than good. Wash hair a maximum of three times a week. After shampooing, use a rich conditioner, such as Miss Jessie's Rapid Recovery Treatment, to supply the hair with ample moisture. This will protect hair against frizz and help prevent shrinkage. While hair is still covered in conditioner, carefully comb through all knots. Sit with the deep conditioner in for 20-30 minutes. Rinse hair.
Gently towel dry hair. Be sure you are patting hair dry and not aggressively rubbing with the towel, as the friction created has the potential to create more frizz. Divide damp hair into 3-4 sections, and apply the styling moisturizer, either Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme or Miss Jessie's Curly Buttercreme. Gently massage your moisturizing styler in hair from root to tip, for full coverage moisture. Sculpt, style, and play with curls- for kinky textures, I suggest trying to create coils or doing a twist out, if you desire to create a more textured, look. Voila! You are Lupita-licious!
Tight Bohemian WavesWhat you need:
- Miss Jessie's Leave-in Condish.
- Miss Jessie's Quick Curls.
- Gentle ponytail elastics.
- Straight bobby pins.
For this style, you will need to do a braid out. You can do this the more traditional way, by following my steps from an earlier blog I wrote on Bohemian Waves, however, if you forgot to preset braids overnight, this a crash course, wash n go alternative to getting the same look.
First, gently towel dry hair. Be sure you are patting hair dry and not aggressively rubbing with the towel, as the friction created has the potential to create more frizz. Divide damp hair into 2- 3 sections, and apply Miss Jessie's Leave in Condish to each. Braid each section all the way to the ends. If I have enough time, I will French Braid each section, to maintain a consistent wave pattern from root to tip, but if time is running short, regular braids work just as well. Once you have completed a braid, instead of fastening the ends, wrap the braid into a Princess Leia bun, fastening with an elastic. Repeat this on all other braids. If your hair is particularly thick, reinforce these buns with a couple of bobby pins. As with the Beach Waves style, carefully unravel your braids when hair is almost completely dry. Chances are, you will still have some damp sections, but this will work to your advantage for the next step, which is applying Miss Jessie's Quick Curls. Gently scrunch hair from ends to roots in an upward motion, with Quick Curls. This lightweight product will provide your waves with the right definition, and protect your hair from harsh, frizz-inducing, natural elements.

Loose Beach WavesWhat you need:
- Miss Jessie's SuperSweetback Treatment.
- Miss Jessie's Quick Curls.
- Spin Pins or Rod Sets.
For an ethereal earth child look, the goal is for waves to look effortlessly loose and sexy, without having the appearance of frizzy, messy bedhead. First, deep condition with Miss Jessie's SuperSweetback Treatment; this rich treatment will make hair easier to style, and moisturized curls are happy curls. Apply a small amount of Miss Jessie's Quick Curls all over to damp hair, to create a solid styling foundation and add a little moisture. Take damp hair and divide it into sections. If you are using Rod Sets to roll hair, use the thicker rods to create a more relaxed wave look and divide hair into sections based on how many rods are available to you. If using the spin pins, divide hair into 2-4 sections. Twist each section, from roots to end, then wrap the twist into a little ballerina bun. Keep in mind, each bun will require 2 spin pins each to hold them in place, so divide hair accordingly. Don't panic if you only have 2 spin pins available- I have been able to make this look work with one bun and one pair of spin pins, it just takes a little longer for it to dry.
Once hair is still slightly wet, but for the most part dry, carefully remove rods or spin pins, to release your tsunami of waves. Before hair is totally dry, gently scrunch hair from ends to roots in an upward motion, with Miss Jessie's Quick Curls. This application of the Quick Curls is probably the most important step, as this lightweight product will seal your style, creating a definition to waves and protecting your hair from harsh, frizz-inducing, natural elements.
So allow Miss Jessie's to help you beat the heat, and still look sweet! And don't forget to pick up the most recent issue of Elle, ASAP! Thanks for the love Lupita!
