If you've been following the news, you are aware of the American military's latest modifications to their grooming policies, and probably have developed your own opinions on the issue. Though the existence of grooming policies in the military are nothing new, these recent modifications to appear to unfairly target African American female soldiers, in particular. This new enforced regiment essentially bans all protective hairstyles or the option of allowing the hair to go completely natural, for women with naturally tight, kinky curls. This limits styling alternatives to relaxers weaves, or microbraids, which we all know are much more high maintenance, painful, and time-consuming processes.
Though the reality of this backward bias is a disappointing one, The Daily Show's satirical take on the issue is as informative, as it is hilarious. Comedian Jessica Williams takes to the streets, speaking with both sides, in pursuit of educating the misinformed masses on the detrimental effects of enforcing such policies, specifically why such rules have the potential to create, "An army without a lot of pissed of black ladies."
I know it's just a comedy sketch, but Jessica Williams makes some valid points. Hopefully this will open some eyes and inspire some change within the American military.
